In my opinion it was slightly strict.
What was the Attendance Policy?
Formally 80% , but no DX grades were awarded.
This Course evaluation comprises of?
Tutorial quizzes, two common quizzes, mid sem and endsem.
Each common quiz – 15% (2 such quizzes)
Mid sem – 30%
End sem – 40%
What are the topics covered in the course?
Black body radiation, photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, wave nature of matter, concept of wave packets, introduction to Fourier transform. Uncertainty principle, Schrodinger equation. Free particle, particle in a box, in a finite square well. Concept of superposition of eigenstates. Scattering problems : reflection and transmission coefficients. Quantum tunneling. Simple harmonic oscillator.
Introduction to statistical physics – classical and quantum particles. Pauli Exclusion principle, microstates and macrostates. Concept of density of states. Applications of classical (MB) and quantum ( FD and BE) statistics.
How were the Lectures for this course?
The lectures can get dull after a point because of all the math involved, but that is when it is most important to pay attention so that you can come back from class and revisit everything, or it is very easy to lose track of the course content.
How were the Exams (Quizzes, Mid-sem and End-sem) for this course?
The tutorial quizzes are very simple. The quiz questions can be solved if one has solved the tutorials regularly. The mid sem and endsem may have questions that will force you to think a little beyond what the tutorial questions asked, so it’s important to be clear with concepts.
How are the Assignments & Projects for this course?
There are no graded assignments, but there are tutorial sheets uploaded on Moodle. These sheets have problems such provide significant insight into concepts, hence it is recommended to solve them.
Any tips for the junta to perform well in the course?
It’s really important to solve previous years’ question papers and be fully clear with the concepts. It’s also crucial to solve every practice question by hand so that you get a hang of the math involved , which may otherwise seem complex.
